Apartment Roach ProblemsI can tell you how to fix your roach problems, but first, let's talk about why the problem exists and how to get rid of it. Good ProximityAn apartment is a melting pot. People come from all over the United States and from all different careers and backgrounds to live next to you. The diversity and culture you feel will be quite different from a setting in a suburban neighborhood with homes. For one thing, people are now going to be much closer to you. This makes it nice when you need to borrow an egg for that chocolate cake or for making new friends. It's also nice to have a clubhouse, a workout room, a pool, and other community things that make living there nice. These are some of the great things about close proximity.Bad ProximityUnfortunately, there is a downside to close proximity. You get people that play their music too loud or people that have three large dogs that bark all day long. Still, there is a greater problem than these annoyances. It's the fact that more disease is spread and, in our case, cockroaches. Now, cockroaches do spread diseases, like lyme disease and salmonella, but mostly they just terrify people and they aren't pleasant to look at. Your guests won't exactly like eating at your home and it can create problems with other suburban friends that think you just live in a disgusting place. It may not be your fault that the neighbor won't get rid of them, but people don't tend to think these things through. There is just an underlying feeling of people that something bad will rub off on them. And, in some cases it's true because just visiting a roach infested home can also bring the problem to your suburban home.People Think DifferentlyLike any melting pot, there is much diversity. People can think much more differently than you might expect. They think differently about how to treat the roach problem and if it should be treated at all. For example:Man from AlabamaAn apartment complex had been roach free for about fifteen years. A man from Alabama that had roaches moved to Colorado. The apartment complex didn't routinely treat for roaches because it had not been a problem. In a couple of months, the entire complex was filled with cockroaches (over sixty units). So, many of the homeowners started treating their units with an extermination service. Now, many of the homeowners noticed the man from Alabama had the problem terribly bad. He was asked to treat his apartment and this is what he said in all seriousness, "Look, there is no need to treat my apartment for roaches. I have lived with them all my life and they don't bother me. You can't get rid of them so you might as well accept it."Now, to a person from Colorado this sounds crazy. Many people in Colorado haven't even seen a real cockroach and to hear someone say this seems a bit silly. Man Living in His CarThere is a guy I once knew that lived his entire life in a car. His parents never had a place to live and so he pretty much grew up in a car or was outdoors. One day, he got married and his new wife said to him, "I think we should save up and buy a house." A few years later, the man was able to purchase a home and this is what he said about it, "I am so grateful to my wife for coming up with the idea to buy a house. I never even thought about getting a house until she said she wanted one and I am so grateful because it is much nicer than living in a car." This isn't a joke. People come from way different backgrounds and it effects their thinking.Asymmetrical InformationSome people do not have internet access or cable television. Some people go to the library to read a lot and others barely read one book per year or less. So, if you are one of the people with limited information, how do you fix your roach problem? Most of these people end up at the grocery isle in the pest control area. You don't want to buy ten different things because it costs way too much. So, you stand there reading all the tiny microprint as people stare at you or pass you by wondering about how you are connected to the roaches. Most people just don't feel that comfortable reading every label word for word and still, it's just confusing and price is always an issue. Most of these people come home with an aerosol can of roach spray. One man I knew, had hundreds of roaches in his utility room. He went in there and sprayed all the roaches with his aerosol spray. Roaches were flying everywhere. He stomped on a few and hit a few with a book. It felt good killing some roaches; to get back at them. Then, he spent nearly a day caulking and cleaning to make sure there was no way they could get back in his home. Unfortunately for him, there were still hundreds hiding peacefully under toe-kicks and in his refrigerator insulation. We had to tell this guy that brute force just doesn't work on roaches. They wouldn't have survived from prehistoric times if they were that easy to get rid of. ManagementThe biggie here is management. They are just regular people and do not know everything about roaches either. Sometimes a good tenant needs to instruct the landlord in their pest control issues; tactfully, of course. A couple of management ideas that come up often that are wrong are these: (1) All products are equally effective and (2) We need permission to treat the unit. All Products Equally EffectiveNow, this may sound immediately like a dumb idea to you or me, but a lot of people actually think this way. One apartment complex owner said this, "I let each tenant choose their own roach killer method because they all work." I presented my case that they are not equally effective and showed him our roach bait. He told me I could leave a flyer for the tenants to read. I didn't bother to leave a flyer because I knew one thing. His roach problems weren't going away until he changed his thinking. In a few months, he called me and we made a plan to treat all the units with the boric acid paste; lesson learned.Getting PermissionNobody wants to get thrown in jail for trespassing. Plus, it's just not fun to make people angry by invading their space. You can't just barge in, but it is perfectly legal to enter the apartment or condominium if you give proper notice. The laws vary by state, but it is usually at least 24-48 hours, but out of courtesy, you should give a bit more time than that. In an emergency, you don't have to give a notice. Why do I bring this up? One condominium manager made a comment to me, "We can't treat all the units because not everyone will give us permission. It's not legal for us to go into their condo without permission." Look, I am not a lawyer , but think about it. Does someone have the right to give you lyme disease, salmonella, drive out your guests, frighten you daily, and give you asthma attacks? I am sure doubt a judge is going to be put you in jail when you say, "Look, their unit had thousands of roaches and so we gave them a three day notice before we went in and treated it for cockroach elimination." Does it sound plausible that you are going to go to jail? No, it is much more plausible that the tenant or condominium owner will get yelled at by the judge. Finally, who, in their right mind is going to sue you for getting rid of their roaches. Getting Rid of the Permission ExcusePeople say they don't want to treat their unit and often hide the reason why. Like we said before, everyone thinks differently. There are usually two reasons people don't want to treat a unit: (1) Cost and (2) Worried about toxicity.CostSome people are behind the "eight ball". You may have enough money to go out to eat once a week or buy a soda or coffee every day, but a lot of people do not have that luxury. Some people have virtually no money and the few bucks they get they do not want to spend on roach killer. They use their few resources to keep food on the table and to keep their children clothed and happy. Many people worry a lot about having enough money to keep the food on the table, the car working, and the kids happy. This may be different than you or I. We may prefer to spend almost anything to get rid of them because they are so repulsive and because we can afford it. To us, going a month without a morning coffee at Starbucks is totally worth getting them gone. To some other people, it's just not on the radar.Fixing the Cost ProblemThe way to fix this problem is to have the management treat all the units. Sadly, the units the are usually infested the worst are the least likely to treat the problem. That's why it takes a proactive management team to come in and provide the needed support. One person I knew talked to the management and they just gave them a story about getting permission and how it wasn't their job and all that. Fortunately, this person realized the cost issue and purchased a bottle of roach bait for all the units and gave it to them; problem solved. It comes down to this? Maybe you shouldn't have to purchase something for someone else. We can all agree on that, but is it worth a couple hundred dollars to get rid of the problem for good? Many people don't realize that doing a good deed can feel really good or how badly some people need it. If you are one of the people that can't afford it, tell the management. They will most certainly find a way to help you out. ToxicityThe great thing about our roach bait is the toxicity is the lowest in the industry. People are relieved when they find out you won't be spraying their carpets, kitchens, walls, and everything else. People are expecting some toxicity, but they want to be educated on the subject. Tell people how the bait is applied in inconspicuous areas that are not easily accessible to humans and that it is all natural and works through dehydration. One mistake some people make is putting the bait all over their baseboards in plain sight. This is really not a good approach. You should read the application instructions. The best places are under sinks, under appliances, and by the water heater. How to Get Rid of CockroachesThe reason I waited until now to tell you how to get rid of cockroaches is because you need to understand the guy from Alabama, the hissing cockroach pet lover, and the management kinks. Like any problem in life, it takes working well with others and choosing something effective. If you remember these two things you will be successful at total elimination: (1) Treat all the units and (2) Use a boric acid roach bait. To purchase some roach bait click here: Roach Killer
